COLLEGE PARK, MD May 8, 2019 - City Manager Scott Somers has announced the appointment of Kiaisha L. Barber as the Director of the City’s Youth, Family and Senior Services Department full-time effective June 17, 2019. Barber replaces Margaret “Peggy” Higgins, who will retire in July after more than 29 years with the City. “We are thrilled to have Kiaisha join the City of College Park. Her experience, skills and passion for youth service bureaus will be a great asset to the Department, the City and our community” said Scott Somers, City Manager.
Barber is coming to the City with 18 years of clinical, local government and community-based experienced. Most recently, she was the Director of School Based Programs for the Tri-County Youth Services Bureau in Waldorf, Maryland. Barber has also provided consultation services on individual, group and family techniques for the City’s Youth, Family and Senior Services department and is a trained supervisor and therapist for Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Her prior experience includes roles such as Executive Director for the District Heights Youth Service Bureau, Manager of middle and high school health centers, and Assistant Director for a foster care agency.
Barber is a licensed certified clinical social worker, with a Masters in Social Work from the University of Washington and a Bachelors in Psychology from Ohio State University.
