December 7, 2023, College Park, MD- The City of College Park is proud to accept the State of Maryland’s prestigious Maryland Sustainable Growth Award for the City’s Hollywood Streetscape Project. Presented by Maryland Department of Planning Secretary Rebecca L. Flora at the December 5 Council Meeting, this award recognizes the project’s strategic community design to provide gathering and recreation spaces as well as a safer connection for pedestrians and bicyclists. “This award serves as a testament to the City’s dedication to the State’s 12 Planning Visions of growth and sustainability: Community Design, Public Participation, and Quality of Life and Sustainability” said Fazlul Kabir, Mayor of College Park.
Completed in Fall 2023, the Hollywood Streetscape Project is located along Rhode Island Avenue in the Hollywood commercial district. The project has revitalized a previously barren and busy intersection by adding biking and pedestrian infrastructure and open spaces for recreational activities. The Hollywood Streetscape Project features several stage areas where local artists and musicians can host pop-up performances, as well as swings, picnic tables, benches, widened sidewalks, bus platforms, and fully painted bike lanes. To further promote walkability and access, the Project includes a safe pedestrian connection to Hollywood Plaza for neighborhood residents. Landscaping of the project area includes native plant and tree plantings for both attractiveness and to encourage our native pollinators.
In 2023, the Maryland Sustainable Growth Awards recognized six winners and one honorable mention to individuals and organizations that demonstrate their commitment and care for sustainable growth. Nineteen entries were submitted for this award. The “Scenario Planning for Restorative Justice in Lakeland, College Park, MD” Community Planning Studio course at the University of Maryland in partnership with the City’s Department of Planning and Community Development received an honorable mention.
