MDOT SHA BEGINS SEWER WORK ALONG US 1 IN COLLEGE PARK

Work Will Prevent Sewer Impacts; Temporary Detours Expected Through Late March

(February 9, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is installing a temporary sewer system on US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) near Navahoe Street in College Park. This system will keep residents and businesses from having their sewer services impacted during construction. Work began this morning.

Work is permitted weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and overnight, seven days a week between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. During these work hours, crews will close Navahoe Street from US 1 to 48th Avenue and detour traffic around the work zone through late March. Additional work hours and lane closures on US 1 maybe be needed, and construction equipment may be disruptive. The work is part of MDOT SHA’s project to improve US 1 between College Avenue and MD 193 (University Boulevard). Learn more about the project here

During this phase of construction, MDOT SHA crews will install a temporary above-ground piping system. Crews will also add a pumping system to reduce impacts to addresses inside the sewer work project limits.  Motorists are advised to add extra commute time, and to consider alternative routes such as Berwyn House Road, Lakeland Road, Rhode Island Avenue and 48th Avenue.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slow-down in construction zones. For a list of all major MDOT SHA projects, go to Project Portal. Visit our homepage at roads.maryland.gov. For a look at real-time traffic conditions, go to md511.maryland.gov
