Public Works is located at Davis Hall, 9217 51st Avenue, College Park, Maryland 20740.  Telephone 240-487-3590, FAX 301-474-0825.  Office hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m., except City holidays. 

 

  

Regular Refuse

  • All refuse carts and recycling containers must be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on scheduled refuse days.
  • Carts and recycling containers must be removed from the curb before midnight on refuse collection day.
  • All regular trash should be placed inside the refuse cart. If the volume of household refuse exceeds the capacity of the cart, place refuse in disposable containers next to the cart.
  • Do not place recycling items in carts.
  • Refuse carts must be kept clean by the user.
  • Dogs and other pets must be confined on collection days.
  • Do not place hazardous materials, such as oil, paint, poison, caustics, explosives and pressurized tanks, inside the carts.
  • Any items which could be a hazard to the collector (such as broken glass, etc.) should be placed inside the cart or an impervious disposable container and clearly labeled to indicate the hazard to the collector.

Carts

Carts are provided to all College Park residents at no charge. Replacement carts will be provided by the City at no cost if the need for replacement was not caused by owner abuse. Carts that are destroyed or become unusable as a result of the acts or negligence by the user shall be required to be replaced, and the user shall pay the replacement cost of the cart.

 

Cart Placement

  •  Carts must be placed with the front opening facing the street

  •  Carts must be left in an open space and keept away from sign poles, trees, fire hydrants and parked cars.

Materials Accepted for Collection

  • Garbage (food waste)

  • Normal household trash and other refuse which is not recyclable

  • Domestic animal waste wrapped in plastic bags

  • Bulky items such as furniture, mattresses and other miscellaneous items

  • Items such as major appliances, tires, building material and brush are collected.

Syringe Disposal

 

If a sharps (sealed impervious) container is not available, needles must be capped and the syringe placed inside a plastic bottle (such as soda bottle) with the cap on the bottle.  Place capped bottle inside the trash cart.

 

Items Not Collected

 

Roof shingles, dirt, rocks, pressurized containers, explosives, paint, poisons, caustics, any hazardous materials

 

Hazardous Waste

 

The City is not permitted to collect hazardous material, including but not limited to: ammunition, cooking oil, car batteries, explosives, fuel, herbicides, mercury, pressurized containers (gas cylinders, fire extinguishers, etc.), oil-based paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, shingles, solvents, sealants, varnishes, and stain. Prince George’s County accepts hazardous materials Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 8:00 am – 3:30 pm. The facility is located at 11611 White House Road Upper Marlboro, MD. Special Trash

 

Special trash is collected by appointment only on Thursday and Friday.  Items must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m.:

Dishwashers, clothes washers, refrigerators, radiators, hot water heaters, boilers, kitchen sinks, bathroom basins and tubs, commodes, vehicle parts, building materials

 

Tires and Appliances

 

Tires and appliances are collected by appointment on Thursday or Friday only by calling 240-487-3590.  The following fees will be charged:

 

Tires                           $4.00 per tire

 

Refrigerators             First unit free during a calendar year (from each household);

                                    $35.00 per unit thereafter

 

Air conditioners         First unit free during a calendar year (from each household);

                                    $35.00 per unit thereafter

 

Heat pumps               First unit free during a calendar year (from each household);

                                    $35.00 per unit thereafter

 

Bulky Trash

 

Bulky trash includes furniture, bedding, move outs and other miscellaneous items.  It is collected on Thursday and Friday by appointment.  Call 240-487-3590 for a trash pick up before placing items at the curb.  Items must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m.

City Holidays

 

New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, President’s Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Election Day (during presidential election years), Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day

 

NOTE:  Trash and recycling days will be 1 day later if the holiday falls on a collection day.

 

Behind the House Pickups

 

Households with no one physically able to move refuse carts and recycling bins to and from the curb may request a back door pickup.  An application and doctor’s note must be filed with Public Works.  Call 240-487-3590 for more information.
