Curbside Recycling

The City of College Park has a curbside recycling program.  Recycling bins are provided at no cost to residents who use City trash service.  Items that are recyclable should NOT be placed in refuse carts.

Why Recycle?

  • Recycling saves money in tipping fees, saving money for the taxpayers.

  • We could save 12 million cubic yards of landfill if half the magazines printed in the U.S. each year were recycled.

  • Each person uses approximately one 100-foot-tall Douglas fir tree in paper and wood products each year.

  • One recycled aluminum can saves enough energy to operate a TV for 3 hours.

  • Americans toss out 2 million tons of junk mail annually at a hauling cost of $320 million.

Recyclable Items

Place Inside Recycling Bin

  • Unbroken glass bottles and jars (rinsed)

  • Plastic bottles and containers numbered 1 – 7 in the triangle symbol on the bottom of the container

  • Bottles, cans, milk jugs, detergent bottles, shampoo bottles (rinsed)

  • Metal cans (rinsed and with lids removed)

Leave papers next to the bin in paper bags or tied with string or twine

Bundle items and tie with rope or string (do not use wire or put in plastic bags). Items must be less than 5 feet long & weigh less than 75 pounds.

Used Motor Oil

Used motor oil is a recyclable item.  A receptacle for recycling used motor oil is provided year-round at the Public Works facility and is available at all times.  Oil shall be deposited in accordance with directions posted at the facility by the City.

Public Works now has a limited number of recycling bins to loan to groups interested in recycling beverage containers at special events (picnics, fairs, celebrations, etc…). These containers are intended to be used to collect recyclable bottles and cans. They use a clear plastic bag, and have specially designed lids with decals so participants can easily tell what materials should be placed in the container. They are easy to set up and use, and the bags can be replaced quickly so that when they are filled, recyclables don’t end up in the trash! For more information and to see images of the container, visit http://www.clearstreamcontainers.info/10.html

We will work with you to coordinate collection and drop-off of the containers and recyclables following your event. We have them on a trial basis, and must be careful not to loose any! Please contact Public Works at 301-474-4194 if you are interested in borrowing them - or if you have any questions.
