This department is
organized into three functional areas – planning and zoning, community
development, and economic development. The planning program involves the
preparation of local plans, as needed, and the coordination of planning
efforts with other agencies including the Maryland-National Capital Park and
Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit
Authority (WMATA), and the University of Maryland. Planning staff review and
provide recommendations to the City Council on plans, projects, and
development applications within the city and vicinity. The Advisory Planning
Commission (APC) is supported by the Planning Department and holds public
hearings on applications for zoning appeals and departures. The
department also applies for and administers funding from local, state and
federal sources to enhance the city as a place to live, work and visit.
The economic development program is focused on revitalizing the city’s
commercial districts and providing assistance for business retention,
expansion and recruitment.
